Abstract

This paper investigates the fundamental limits of physical description when addressing the origin of the universe and the putative regime preceding the emergence of spacetime itself. While modern physics provides remarkably successful models of the early universe, these frameworks rely intrinsically on spacetime as a structural prerequisite for defining dynamics, causality, and observability. The central thesis advanced here is that the difficulty in describing a pre-spacetime phase is not merely technical or empirical, but structural and epistemological: all current physical theories presuppose spacetime in order to formulate states, laws, and measurements. Consequently, any attempt to construct a fully physical account of “before spacetime” exceeds the well-defined domain of empirical science and enters a boundary region between physics and metaphysics. The paper develops this argument through a systematic analysis of: General Relativity, where spacetime becomes dynamically singular at the Big Bang. Quantum Mechanics and Quantum Field Theory, which require a predefined temporal and causal structure. Contemporary approaches to quantum gravity, including Loop Quantum Cosmology, the Hartle–Hawking no-boundary proposal, holography, and causal set theory. By distinguishing between mathematical consistency and physical meaning, the study clarifies why many speculative cosmological models—although formally coherent—remain epistemically underdetermined in the absence of testable predictions. The work further examines the philosophical implications of this boundary, including the status of causality, the notion of an initial condition, and the role of metaphysical assumptions in cosmological theorizing. Rather than proposing a new cosmological model, this paper aims to provide a rigorous conceptual framework for understanding what physics can—and cannot—say about the ultimate origin of the universe. It argues that the emergence of spacetime marks not only a physical threshold, but also an epistemological one, beyond which scientific description gives way to metaphysical interpretation. Keywords:Philosophy of physics; quantum cosmology; origin of spacetime; limits of scientific explanation; epistemology of physics; metaphysics of cosmology; quantum gravity.
