An Immediate Grammar Analysis of "...te, hai," as a Chain-Maintenance Device in Japanese (Japanese)
Abstract
This short paper analyzes the Japanese expression “…te, hai,” as a chain-maintenance device in conversation from the perspective of Immediate Grammar. It shows how action listing with the te-form and the maintenance of an intentionally incomplete ending with hai induce the listener’s next turn.
