Introduction to Anatomic Pathology
Abstract
This chapter introduces anatomic pathology as the medical specialty responsible for definitive tissue-based diagnosis. It covers core principles, historical foundations (including Virchow’s cellular pathology), the diagnostic workflow—from specimen receipt to final report—and the pathologist’s role in guiding clinical care. A case of primary mediastinal large B-cell lymphoma illustrates key concepts of tissue triage, diagnostic reasoning, and therapeutic impact.
