Workshop report: Contributions of regenerative and ecological restoration in the Mediterranean
Abstract
This report synthesizes the outcomes of the international workshop held in Barcelona (26–27 June 2025), which convened 35 experts from ten Mediterranean countries to examine how regenerative agriculture and ecological restoration can address the region’s escalating environmental and socio-economic pressures. Participants identified shared challenges—including soil degradation, water scarcity, climate-driven extremes, biodiversity loss, and rural vulnerability—and mapped existing practices that are already contributing to more resilient and sustainable landscapes. The workshop also highlighted the institutional, economic, environmental, cultural, and knowledge barriers that impede wider adoption of these solutions. Building on collective expertise, the report outlines priority knowledge needs and opportunities for cooperation at local, national, and regional scales. As the first of two complementary deliverables, it provides an evidence-informed foundation for future dialogue, capacity-building, and policy innovation aimed at advancing a common Mediterranean vision for regenerative agriculture and ecological restoration.
