To the Law and to the Testimony: The Canonical Standard of Light from Isaiah to Revelation
Abstract
Isaiah 8:20 establishes Scripture’s enduring standard of discernment: “To the law and to the testimony.” This article argues that Isaiah’s criterion is not an isolated prophetic warning but a canonical principle shaping the entire biblical witness. Proverbs 6:23 identifies the law as light, grounding Isaiah’s standard in the wisdom tradition. The New Testament intensifies this pattern through the testimony of Jesus and the apostolic witness. Revelation 12:17 presents the remnant as those who keep the commandments of God and hold the testimony of Jesus, embodying Isaiah’s standard in the eschatological conflict with the dragon. Together, these passages reveal a unified biblical theology of discernment, obedience, and spiritual identity. This article traces the canonical development of this theme and explores its implications for the church’s task of discernment in an age of competing voices.
