Abstract

This dissertation examines the impact of culturally responsive pedagogy (CRP) on student engagement in multicultural classroom settings. As classrooms become increasingly diverse, educators are challenged to adopt instructional practices that recognize, value, and integrate students’ cultural backgrounds into teaching and learning processes. Grounded in culturally responsive teaching theory and student engagement frameworks, this study explores how CRP influences behavioral, emotional, and cognitive engagement among students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Using a mixed-methods approach, the research analyzes quantitative data on student engagement outcomes alongside qualitative insights from educators’ instructional practices and perceptions. Findings indicate that culturally responsive pedagogical strategies—such as inclusive curriculum design, culturally relevant examples, positive teacher–student relationships, and affirming classroom environments—significantly enhance student participation, motivation, and sense of belonging. The study contributes to the growing body of literature on equity-focused educational practices and provides practical recommendations for teachers, school leaders, and policymakers seeking to improve engagement and learning outcomes in multicultural classrooms. The findings underscore the importance of culturally responsive pedagogy as a critical component of effective teaching in diverse educational contexts.
