Abstract
ABSTRACT The aim of this study is to reveal how gender roles are addressed in the children's book "Fish Soup" by Ursula K. Le Guin, by identifying the words with which the characters are most frequently associated. For this purpose, Ursula K. Le Guin's children's book "Fish Soup" was digitized. Concepts related to the characters in the book (woman, man, girl, and boy) were selected, and the AntConc program was used to determine which words these concepts were most frequently associated with. This descriptive study, conducted using a general survey design, sampled the children's work "Fish Soup. " The concepts of woman, man, girl, and boy in "Fish Soup" were analyzed using the relational analysis method, a content analysis technique that examines the relationships between elements. In the final stage, the concepts were interpreted in relation to the nouns/noun phrases with which they are associated. As a result, how the characters' gender roles are addressed was presented under five headings: personality roles assigned to the character, professional roles, roles within and outside the family, and roles and behaviors in household chores. The study concluded that the female character is mostly depicted with qualities such as writing, binding books, and being disorganized, while the male character is endowed with qualities such as thinking, making pudding, washing dishes, frying fish, being tidy, and clean. The data obtained from the study revealed that the characters in the book are not portrayed with a stereotypical sexist understanding.
