Abstract

This case study report re-assesses Manikyala Stupa (the “Great Tope”) in the Gandhara region (near Rawalpindi) through an integrated review of (i) the 1830 excavation record, (ii) architectural characterization, and (iii) relic-deposit typology with a specific focus on tooth relic (danta dhātu) morphology and registry standardization. Manikyala Stupa (The Great Tope… The stupa is documented as a mature Gandharan/Kushan monument: a hemispherical dome (aṇḍa) elevated on a high drum with a grand stair access and Greco-Buddhist decorative vocabulary (pilasters and Corinthian capitals), with an estimated diameter of ~39 m and original height exceeding ~30 m. Manikyala Stupa (The Great Tope… Excavation accounts attribute the principal intervention to General Jean-Baptiste Ventura (1830) and describe a “tower-like” vertical sequence of deposits consistent with repeated consecration or re-sealing events. Manikyala Stupa (The Great Tope… The primary deposit inventory indicates an imperial Kushan nested reliquary system (copper → silver → gold) containing a brown liquid matrix and “charred bones” (śarīra), alongside mixed coinage—including Kanishka issues and Roman silver—supporting Kushan-period dating and royal patronage. Manikyala Stupa (The Great Tope… The report further contextualizes local doctrinal association with the Sattva Jātaka (Body Offering) and provides standardized criteria for identifying and describing tooth relics by morphology and enshrinement pattern. Manikyala Stupa (The Great Tope… An updated tracking entry additionally records a Manikyala-linked tooth relic presently in Naypyitaw (Myanmar) with noted modern restorative intervention and observable dental pathology, raising conservation and provenance-control considerations.
