Phra Phuttha Panchaphakhi and the Golden Jubilee Commemorative Issue of 1996
Abstract
Phra Phuttha Panchaphakhi refers to a set of five principal Buddha images that have been formally recognized as the “Five National Buddha Images of Thailand.” These comprise Phra Buddha Sothorn, Phra Buddha Chinnasi, Phra Buddha Chinnaraj, Phra Mongkhon Bophit and Phra Nirantarai. On the auspicious occasion of the Golden Jubilee Celebration in B.E. 2539 (1996), the Thai state officially issued a commemorative coin series featuring these five Buddha images. The obverse of each coin bears the portrait of His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej, while the reverse depicts one of the five Buddha images within the context of a state-sponsored royal commemoration. This article aims to examine the significance of Phra Phuttha Panchaphakhi through three analytical dimensions: (1) historical and Buddhist art perspectives, (2) state ritual and symbolic authority and (3) commemorative coin design as a medium of cultural communication. The study demonstrates that Phra Phuttha Panchaphakhi is not merely a collection of revered Buddha images, but rather a symbolic structure that systematically integrates Buddhism, the monarchy and the Thai nation-state.
