From "Attention Is All You Need" to "Structure Is All You Need"
Abstract
This record presents “From Attention Is All You Need to Structure Is All You Need”, a conceptual and systems-oriented paper arguing that structure—not any single model mechanism—is the first-order organizing principle that enables AI to scale, deploy, and remain trustworthy over time. The work develops a structural continuity thesis across three layers: Model layer (Transformers): self-attention is treated as a structural operator that makes relational structure explicit and computable at scale. Physical layer (EDA and AI hardware): electronic design automation is framed as a structural adjudication layer that determines whether structures can survive under manufacturability, power, timing, thermal, and reliability constraints. Collaboration layer (Human–AI interaction): the paper identifies a discontinuity: while structure is explicit inside models and hardware, it remains largely inexpressible at the human–AI interface under prompt-centric interaction. To address this gap, the paper introduces Structured Expression Resonance (SER) as a collaboration-oriented structural language system. SER is positioned not as a control language or a replacement for natural language, but as a method for making collaboration structure explicit, negotiable, reusable, and verifiable, enabling humans to participate in structural decision-making rather than only providing outcome-driven instructions. Overall, the paper reframes the historical significance of Transformers as an empirical signal of a broader principle: when structure is correctly expressed, intelligence becomes scalable—and argues that future progress will increasingly depend on structural competition (stability, verifiability, reuse, and alignment) rather than capability metrics alone. This work is relevant to researchers and practitioners in AI architectures, human–AI collaboration, systems engineering, and AI governance, and is intended as a theoretical foundation for subsequent SER/SCLS-based publications.
