Stage Matching in Multi-Stage Axial Compressors
Abstract
Modern aircraft engines employ axial compressors designed to achieve high pressure ratios and efficiency. However, engine operation is not limited to the design point; off-design conditions such as takeoff, climb, cruise, and particularly low-speed flight-idle impose significant challenges. For a compressor to operate stably and efficiently across this wide operating envelope, the stages must remain aerodynamically synchronized. This aerodynamic compatibility is known in the literature as stage matching, and it is a critical factor for both the performance and stability of multi-stage axial compressors.
