The Cave Management
Abstract
AbstractThis paper challenges the traditional "shamanic" and "aesthetic" dogmas of modern archaeology regarding Paleolithic cave art (Chauvet, Lascaux, Altamira). The author proposes a "Pragmatic Logic" model, viewing caves not as sanctuaries, but as engineered facilities for resource management. The absence of human imagery, the use of "north-facing" ventilation, and the presence of dot-notations are interpreted as elements of a sophisticated logistical system designed for food preservation and community stability.1. Introduction: The "Warehouse" HypothesisTraditional archaeology often overlooks the extreme environmental pressures of the Paleolithic. This report argues that every action taken by early hunters was governed by the law of maximum efficiency. The cave was a strategic asset—a high-tech "branch" (similar to the Jaguar's storage strategy) used to secure community survival.2. Engineering: The "North-Facing" Air ConditionerMany significant caves (e.g., Altamira) feature north-facing entrances.Thermal Insulation: In a +40°C summer or a glacial winter, the cave acts as a natural "thermos," maintaining a constant +10–12°C.Preservation: This temperature, combined with natural airflow, allowed for the long-term storage of carcasses and the production of dried (jerky) meat, facilitating permanent settlement rather than nomadic risk.3. Functional Symbolism: The Absence of "Self"The prominent absence of human figures in cave art is a critical data point. The Ledger Logic: In a business ledger, one records assets, not the accountant. The animals on the walls are assets.Tactile Navigation: In low-light conditions, the use of natural rock relief to create 3D animal figures served as tactile "labels" for inventory identification.
