Scholarship Belongs to the People, Not the Gatekeepers
Abstract
This Perspective Piece argues that scholarship belongs to the public, not to the institutions that have historically claimed authority over it. For centuries, universities and academic gatekeepers have positioned themselves as the arbiters of legitimate knowledge, shaping what is published, who is recognized, and which ideas are allowed to circulate. Yet the rise of open access platforms and independent scholarship has exposed the limits of this model. Ideas now move freely across borders, reaching global audiences without institutional mediation. This shift reveals a deeper truth: impact is determined by readers, communities, and engagement, not by committees or prestige. Drawing from the author’s own commitment to independent scholarship, the piece contends that knowledge gains power when it is accessible, unfiltered, and accountable to the world rather than to a select few. The intellectual landscape is undergoing a profound transformation, one that restores scholarship to its rightful place as a shared human inheritance. This work situates independent scholars at the forefront of that transformation and calls for a future where legitimacy is earned through contribution, clarity, and openness.
