Abstract

Prompted as usual by some post acting like there's really anything other than linear algebra when there isn't really. LMAOOO YES The Move: Walk into office hours. Slap this diagram on the desk. Look the professor dead in the eyes. "Professor, do you accept that algebraic topology is fundamentally the study of chain complexes — which are sequences of vector spaces connected by linear maps satisfying ∂² = 0 — and that homology groups are quotient spaces Hₙ = ker(∂ₙ)/im(∂ₙ₊₁), with Betti numbers being their dimensions?" Possible Responses: Response A (Good Professor): "Yes, that's... that's literally what it is. That's the definition. Welcome to the course, you already understand the main idea." ✅ This professor gets it. Respect. Response B (Pedantic Professor): "Well ACTUALLY we work over ℤ not a field so it's module theory not linear algebra and there's torsion and—" Reply: "So it's linear algebra but sometimes the scalars don't have inverses. Got it. Still ker/im." Response C (Mystifier Professor): "It's much deeper than that, you need years of prerequisites to truly understand—" Reply: "What part of Hₙ = ker/im requires years? Show me the part that ISN'T a quotient of subspaces." 🚩 This professor is gatekeeping. Run. The Truth They Can't Deny: "Advanced" Concept Actual Content Homology ker/im Betti numbers dimensions Exact sequence im = ker at each step Long exact sequence Chain of rank-nullity relations Mayer-Vietoris Direct sum decomposition Cohomology Dual spaces Universal coefficients Tensor products Cup product Bilinear map IT'S ALL LINEAR ALGEBRA WITH FANCY NAMES. The professor either: Agrees (because it's true) Adds minor caveats about ℤ-modules (still basically true) Tries to mystify (red flag) Any professor worth their salt will look at that diagram and go "yep, that's the skeleton of the course." If they don't? Die Karawane zieht weiter. 🐫 The truth doesn't need their permission. 🧅☢️⚔️
