Abstract

Code and Data for CDHE Risk Analysis Overview This repository contains the processed datasets and Python scripts used for the analysis of compound drought and heatwave event (CDHE) risk. The associated manuscript is currently under review. The materials provided here are intended to support transparency and reproducibility of the main analyses presented in the manuscript. The repository includes: Processed datasets used to generate the main figures of the manuscript. Python scripts for reproducing Figures 1–4. An example Python script demonstrating the core calculation of CDHE risk, using CESM2 as an example model. Repository Contents Main Figure Scripts The following scripts reproduce the main figures presented in the manuscript: Figure 1.pyGenerates the main CDHE occurrence, duration, and magnitude results for SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5. Figure 2.pyGenerates the regional CDHE risk-scaling and risk-disparity analyses. Figure 3.pyGenerates the analysis of the relationship between CDHE occurrence and land–atmosphere coupling, including regional and spatial analyses. Figure 4.pyGenerates the analysis of the contributions of hazard, exposure, and vulnerability to changes in CDHE risk and to the risky-get-more-risky relationship. The corresponding processed datasets required by these scripts are provided with this repository. CDHE Risk Calculation The repository also includes: CDHE_risk_cal_example_CESM2.py This script provides an example of the core CDHE risk calculation framework used in the study, using CESM2 under SSP1-2.6 and SSP5-8.5 as an example. The risk framework combines three components: Hazard, derived from CDHE occurrence frequency, duration, and magnitude. Exposure, derived from population density and GDP density. Vulnerability, derived from vulnerable land-use information and GDP per capita. The three components are combined to calculate CDHE risk as: [Risk = Hazard^{0.5} x Exposure^{0.25} x Vulnerability^{0.25}] Before aggregation, the individual indicators are normalized to a common range. The CESM2 script is provided to illustrate the calculation procedure applied in the study. Data Structure The scripts use processed NetCDF (.nc) and CSV (.csv) datasets organized into directories such as: YOUR_PATH/ │ ├── results/ │ └── analysis/ │ ├── post_processed_dataset/ │ ├── land-atmos/ │ ├── Aridity_index/ │ ├── POP/ │ ├── GDP/ │ ├── LAND_USE/ │ ├── ipcc_region/ │ ├── CRA/ │ ├── land.nc └── IPCC_region_id_hexagon.csv Before running the scripts, replace: YOUR_PATH with the local path to the downloaded repository or dataset directory. For example: df = xr.open_dataset( 'YOUR_PATH/post_processed_dataset/example.nc' ) should be changed according to the location of the repository on the user's system. IPCC AR6 Regional Masks Regional analyses use masks corresponding to the IPCC AR6 reference land regions. The regional mask files are stored in: ipcc_region/ with filenames following the convention: ARP_masked_c.nc CAF_masked_c.nc CAU_masked_c.nc ... WSB_masked_c.nc These masks are used to calculate area-weighted regional quantities for the CDHE and land–atmosphere coupling analyses and for the CDHE risk calculation. Python Requirements The main Python packages used by the provided scripts include: numpy pandas xarray matplotlib scipy scikit-learn cartopy basemap Package requirements differ slightly among individual scripts. Reproducing the Main Figures After downloading the repository: Install the required Python packages. Replace all occurrences of YOUR_PATH in the scripts with the local repository path. Maintain the directory structure of the supplied datasets. Run the corresponding Python script for each figure. For example: python "Figure 1.py" python "Figure 2.py" python "Figure 3.py" python "Figure 4.py" The CESM2 risk calculation example can be run using: python CDHE_risk_cal_example_CESM2.py Notes The datasets included in this repository are processed datasets prepared for reproducing the analyses and figures presented in the associated manuscript. The CDHE_risk_cal_example_CESM2.py script is intended to demonstrate the principal CDHE risk calculation procedure using one climate model as an example. The multi-model results used in the main figures were obtained by applying the corresponding analysis framework across the models considered in the study.
