Consequences of Proto-Indo-European as a Field Invariant: Implications for Vedic Studies and Sanskrit Linguistics
Abstract
The reclassification of Proto-Indo-European (PIE) as a field invariant—a constraint set abstracted from preserved structure rather than a temporally prior spoken language—has profound consequences for Vedic studies and Sanskrit linguistics. This paper examines these implications systematically, demonstrating how the field invariant model transforms our understanding of Vedic chronology, textual interpretation, linguistic reconstruction, and the relationship between Sanskrit and other Indo-European languages. Under the field invariant framework, Vedic Sanskrit functions as an early stabilized anchor register (stabilization ≥5000 BCE), not a late descendant of PIE. This reclassification necessitates fundamental shifts in Vedic studies: (1) chronological reinterpretation—Vedic texts preserve early field structure, not late innovations; (2) textual analysis—archaic features reflect preservation mechanisms, not temporal depth; (3) comparative method—Sanskrit enables reconstruction because it anchors the field, not because it descends from PIE; (4) linguistic variation—internal Vedic diversity reflects register stratification, not chronological layering; (5) cultural interpretation—Vedic culture emerges within the field, not from a proto-culture. These consequences challenge conventional assumptions in Vedic studies while providing a logically consistent framework that resolves longstanding contradictions between linguistic evidence, archaeological data, and textual analysis. The field invariant model offers new directions for understanding Vedic Sanskrit's unique role in Indo-European reconstruction and its relationship to vernacular Indo-Aryan varieties.
