Metroglobal - Document 5 - Functional Value Provision and Coordination
Abstract
Value in human societies is provided through functions that meet needs, enable capabilities, or maintain desirable states. Such value provision requires coordination across actors, resources, competences, and time, and is increasingly mediated by quantified information. Under Earth-scale invariant conditions, failures in coordination do not only produce inefficiency but may compromise long-term viability. Metroglobal Document 5 establishes a structural model for functional value provision and coordination within the Metroglobal reference frame. It distinguishes value from economic exchange, identifying value as the realised or anticipated usefulness of functions, while treating economy as a mechanism for trade and trade-offs rather than a source of value itself. The document clarifies how value provision, maintenance of value, and transformation of value depend on reliable facts about needs, capacities, constraints, and consequences. Document 5 is explicitly aligned with GENERAL FACTIS and Metroglobal Epistemic Principle MEP-1. It presupposes FACTIS-based conditions for verified facts and applies MEP-1 to clarify epistemic responsibility where facts constrain value provision or coordination. The document is non-prescriptive and non-normative in outcome. Its purpose is to provide a coherent analytical foundation for understanding how value can be created, maintained, and coordinated within invariant boundaries, without collapsing value into price, extraction, or short-term optimisation.
