Abstract

Abstract: This work offers a chronological overview of the constitutional transformation of the British Empire into the modern Commonwealth. Through the analysis of key legislative milestones, the text documents the transition from “responsible government” in 19th-century colonies to the full sovereignty established by the Statute of Westminster of 1931. It rigorously examines the particularities of the Dominions of Canada, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, and Ireland, as well as the redefinition of the organization in 1949 following the London Declaration. The article concludes with the current configuration of the Commonwealth, highlighting the position of the 15 Commonwealth Realms and the expansion of membership to states with no historical ties to the United Kingdom.
