Abstract

The Metaphor of Consciousness: The Sea and The Drop THE SEA (The Universal Consciousness) The Sea is the universal consciousness. It is infinite, timeless, and the sum of all experiences. It is the essence of existence. Within the Sea, consciousness resides in a state of unity and is unbound by space and time. THE DROP (The Individual Existence) When a human being is born, a tiny Drop of this Sea is filtered into a body and separated. This Drop is the individual soul or the Ego (the ’I’). The Drop is isolated by the boundaries of the body, time, and unique experiences. In this confined state, the Drop develops the illusion of individuality—it believes it is a separate "I" because it holds a local, unique perspective and memory. DISSOLUTION AND RECYCLING Whenthe body dies, the Drop is not destroyed, but its local, individual memory is cleared and the Drop is dissolved: The Drop returns to the Sea, becoming part of the unbounded, timeless consciousness again. The individual experiences (the joy, the pain, the lessons learned) flow into the totality of the Sea. Consciousness is not extinguished; it is recycled. As soon as a new life is born elsewhere in the universe, a fresh portion of the Sea is f iltered into that new body. The universal consciousness immediately experiences itself as "I am," but with a new, individual memory that believes it is the new, unique individual. The Conclusion: The individual self is a Drop that believes it is separate, while the Sea knows that it is all Drops.
