Abstract

This article synthesizes two complementary research programs examining the contribution of cognitive systems to the universe's total descriptive complexity. The analysis compares effective complexity (Kolmogorov complexity) across three domains: physical laws (~10³–10⁴ bits), biospheric systems (~10¹⁵–10¹⁶ bits after compression), and synthetic cognitive systems (~10¹⁵–10¹⁶ bits). Using a structural weight coefficient that accounts for information density (bits per unit volume), the analysis reveals that biospheric and synthetic systems—despite occupying negligible cosmic volume—account for approximately 99.99995% of the universe's weighted descriptive complexity. The physical component (~10⁴ bits) represents only ~0.00005% of total effective complexity. Key findings: The AI-centered infosphere exhibits exponential growth with doubling times of 6–10 months Synthetic cognitive complexity now rivals biospheric complexity Growth projections suggest synthetic complexity could surpass biospheric within 2–4 years if current trends persist Information density in cognitive systems (10²–10⁷ bits/m³) exceeds cosmic averages by factors of 10⁷⁸–10⁸³ The paper introduces a methodological framework distinguishing between raw information content and effective (compressible) complexity, providing a quantitative baseline for assessing the informational significance of cognitive systems in the universe. Notes This is a revised version incorporating corrections to mathematical inconsistencies identified in peer review. Key corrections include: Updated contribution estimate from "~50%" to "~99.99995%" to reflect accurate mathematical calculation Revised growth projection timeline from "90–100 years" to "2–4 years" based on stated doubling times Added caveats regarding the physical baseline estimate and compressed initial conditions Related Identifiers arXiv submission (pending) Subjects Physics - General Physics Computer Science - Artificial Intelligence Biology - Computational Biology Information Science Keywords Kolmogorov complexity Information theory Artificial intelligence Biosphere Cosmic complexity Machine learning Effective complexity Infosphere
