A Comprehensive Review of Major Types of Review Articles: Concepts, Methods, and Applications in Scientific Research
Abstract
Abstract Review articles are essential to modern scientific progress because they organize dispersed evidence, summarize what is known, identify research gaps, and set agendas for future inquiry. As research outputs expand, well-designed reviews have become a primary tool for converting large bodies of literature into usable knowledge for scientists, practitioners, and policy makers. This comprehensive review explains the major types of review articles—narrative reviews, systematic reviews, meta-analyses, scoping reviews, comparative reviews, critical reviews, theoretical reviews, integrative reviews, rapid reviews, and nano reviews—focusing on (i) conceptual purpose, (ii) core methods and reporting expectations, (iii) strengths and limitations, and (iv) best-fit applications. The paper provides practical guidance for selecting an appropriate review design and executing it with transparency and scholarly rigor. Keywords: review article; evidence synthesis; systematic review; meta-analysis; scoping review; integrative review; rapid review; narrative review; nano review
