Abstract

This is the final peer-reviewed project report for the systematic review "The health and environmental impact of dental amalgam and alternative restorative materials: a systematic review". This work was undertaken by the Exeter Policy Research Programme Evidence Review Facility. Review aims: To compare the adverse health and environmental impacts of dental amalgam versus other dental restorative materials. 1 Research question 1: What is the health impact of direct dental restorations made of amalgam compared to other direct restorative materials? 2 Research question 2: What is the environmental impact of direct dental restorations made of dental amalgam compared to other direct restorative materials? Addendum notice: This report is accompanied by an addendum which sets out the implications of a study report identified after completion of the systematic review. The addendum explains how this additional evidence affects interpretation of findings relating to environmental impact. The overall conclusions of the systematic review remain unchanged. Funding: This is an independent report commissioned and funded by the National Institute for Health and Care Research (NIHR) Policy Research Programme (NIHR200695 - Evidence Review Facility to support national policy development and evaluation). The views expressed are those of the authors and not necessarily those of the NIHR or the Department of Health and Social Care. Jo Thompson Coon is also supported by the NIHR Applied Research Collaboration South West Peninsula.
