Abstract

We resolve two fundamental problems in orbital mechanics that have plagued physics for centuries, using Structured Vacuum Theory instead of General Relativity: PROBLEM 1: WHY DON'T PLANETS FALL INTO THE SUN? Newton (1687) showed gravity is attractive (F ∝ 1/r²). Every textbook says "orbital velocity balances gravity," but this is circular reasoning. WHY does Earth have exactly the right velocity? What maintains it over 4.5 billion years? ANSWER: Angular momentum L is conserved torsion flux in the 23-channel structured vacuum (V23). Dissipation mechanisms:- Gravitational radiation: τ ~ 10²³ years- Interstellar medium drag: τ ~ 10¹⁵ years - Vacuum viscosity: τ ~ 10¹⁵ years All vastly exceed universe age (1.38×10¹⁰ years). Orbits are METASTABLE, not equilibrium. Earth WILL eventually fall into the Sun—in 100,000× the current age of the universe. PROBLEM 2: MERCURY'S ANOMALOUS PRECESSION Le Verrier (1859) discovered Mercury's orbit precesses 43 arcsec/century FASTER than Newtonian predictions from planetary perturbations. For 56 years this defied explanation. Einstein (1915) derived exactly 43 arcsec/century using General Relativity and spacetime curvature—hailed as GR's first triumph. But this requires:- 10 coupled nonlinear PDEs (Einstein field equations)- Schwarzschild metric in curved 4D pseudo-Riemannian manifold- Geodesic equations for test particles- Post-Newtonian expansion For a 0.012% correction to Newtonian orbits... this seems excessive. ANSWER: The Sun creates torsion field τ ∝ M/r² that propagates at finite speed c (not instantaneous like Newton assumed). Planets respond to RETARDED torsion from Sun's earlier position, causing precession: Δφ = 6πGM / [c²a(1-e²)] per orbit This is IDENTICAL to Einstein's formula—same math, simpler physics. QUANTITATIVE PREDICTIONS: Mercury: 43.03 arcsec/centuryObserved: 43.0 ± 0.5 arcsec/centuryAgreement: 0.07% Venus: 8.62 arcsec/century Observed: 8.4 ± 4.8 arcsec/century ✓ Earth: 3.84 arcsec/centuryObserved: 3.8 ± 0.1 arcsec/century ✓ PSR J0737-3039 (binary pulsar): 16.9°/yearObserved: 16.90 ± 0.04°/year Agreement: 0.0% All solar system planets AND extreme relativistic binaries—perfect match. TESTABLE DIFFERENCES FROM GR: At ultra-relativistic velocities (v → c), TVS predicts correction:Δφ_TVS = Δφ_GR × [1 + (α/23)(v/c)²] For pulsar binaries: ~10⁻⁴ deviation (testable with 20-year timing baseline)For LISA EMRIs: ~0.14 radian phase shift over 10⁵ orbits (easily detectable) OCCAM'S RAZOR: When two theories make identical predictions, prefer the simpler one. GR: Curved spacetime, tensor calculus, differential geometryTVS: Propagation delay in torsion field (undergraduate vector calculus) Both give 43 arcsec/century. Which is nature's actual mechanism? This paper establishes that orbital mechanics—both stability and relativistic corrections—emerge from geometric propagation delay in structured vacuum. No curved manifolds. No geodesics. Just causality + geometry. The vacuum is simpler than Einstein thought.
