Lines of Earth: Architecture and the Spirit of Terracing
Abstract
Terraced landscapes are living cultural and ecological systems shaped over centuries, integrating geology, climate, and local resources. Their preservation depends on active inhabitation, cultivation, and care. Architecture mediates between historical forms and contemporary needs, addressing functional, ecological, and social challenges while articulating the identities of places and communities. This paper identifies generative principles—such as water flow, wall orientation, and material logic—that guide interventions enhancing habitability and preserving cultural and environmental integrity. It also proposes archetypes for sustainable, contextually grounded architecture in terraced landscapes, offering a design framework that bridges traditional knowledge and contemporary architectural practice.
