ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE IN MEDICINES DEVELOPMENT: REVOLUTIONIZING DRUG DISCOVERY AND CLINICAL TRIALS
Abstract
Drug discovery and clinical trials have been changing rapidly since the advent of artificial intelligence (AI) with accelerated research and costs, and improvements in efficiency. The traditional drug development process is very time-consuming and expensive but has very high attrition rates. AI-based approaches, including machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP), facilitate optimizing the entire range of drug development-from target identification and compound screening to repurposing and clinical trial design. Preclinical development incorporates modeling of PKs and PDs, prediction of toxicity, and drug safety assessments into the development process and clinical trial analytics. In clinical trials, AI will speed up recruitment of patients, real time monitoring, and prediction of adherence to the clinical trial as a whole, thus increasing success rates. AI also serves personalized medicine by providing biomarkers for drug response, predicting such responses, and optimizing the dosage. However, not all is good. There are issues such as data quality, model interpretability, regulatory hurdles, and ethical issues, including bias and data privacy. Working out solutions on all of these aspects with standard regulations, transparent AI models, and collaborative AI Ecosystem will ensure the future of innovation for pharmaceutical research. Integration of AI in drug development holds great potential to transform completely the way in which effective treatments are delivered to patients. The effects are likely to be precision, cost-effectiveness, and affordability in health care. Transformative AI technology for drug discovery and clinical trials is in fast pace research, reducing cost and improving efficiency. Traditional development performs drug development with great time and money but too many attrition rates are very high. AI-enabled approaches that can be machine learning, deep learning, and natural language processing (NLP): these apply in optimizing every part of drug development-from target identification and compound screening, repurposing, and clinical trial design. In the preclinical realm, also make predictions of toxicity, modeling of pharmacokinetics, and pharmacodynamics, and making assessments of the safety of drugs better. In a clinical trial, artificial intelligence hastes the procedures of patient recruitment, real-time monitoring, and adherence prediction, increasing the rate of successful clinical trials. In addition, AI makes personalized medicine by bio-markers for drug responses, predicting them, and optimizing dosing. Not everything is positive though; among other issues are data quality, model interpretability, regulatory hurdles, and ethical issues, including bias and data privacy. All these shall be solved by standard regulations, transparent AI models, and a collaborative AI ecosystem as they will drive future innovations in pharmaceutical research. Taking in AI to drug developmental processes is great potential in coming out with therapy precision, cost reduction.
