STREETPULSE-ASTREET-LEVEL URBAN NEGLECT HEATMAP AND COMMUNITY-DRIVEN SYSTEM FOR MONITORING DAY-TO-DAY URBAN INFRASTRUCTURE ISSUES
Abstract
ABSTRACT Cities are expanding quickly, and maintaining public infrastructure is becoming more and more challenging every day. People frequently deal with issues like potholes, broken sidewalks, broken lighting, flooding, and trash piles, but they are frequently disregarded. Even if a single issue might not seem like much, taken as a whole, these issues negatively impact public safety, make mobility more challenging, harm the environment, and generally reduce the standard of living in urban areas. The actual problem? The majority of city complaint systems are cumbersome, slow, and simply allow you to type up a report, making it difficult to determine how terrible things are or where the worst places. StreetPulse can help with that. It is a community-driven, street-level system that tracks and displays the locations of these issues using a heatmap. Anyone with a computer or phone can hop in and report a problem. It's easy: just take a picture, enter the location, and include a brief description. Together, these reports create a real-time heatmap that highlights the most troubled neighborhoods. The system used by StreetPulse is role-based. Volunteers assist with verification and follow-up, citizens report issues as they arise, and administrators use patterns to determine what needs to be fixed first. Every one has a part to perform in this system, which upholds integrity and order. But in the end, what makes StreetPulse unique is how it will take these discrete grievances and turn them into a highly visual pattern. The entire process becomes more open, and it is much easier for city officials to pinpoint problem areas. At the very least, accountability is much increased because people can see what is being repaired and what is still pending. In the end, StreetPulse facilitates communication between city administrators and citizens, making it easier to address common issues and less difficult to create responsive, equitable, and sustainable communities.
