A relationship study on suicidal tendency and depression among college students
Abstract
A RELATIONSHIP STUDY ON SUICIDAL TENDENCY AND DEPRESSION AMONG COLLEGE STUDENTS This correlational study investigated the relationship between depression and suicidal ideation among 100 college students (50 male and 50 female) aged 18 to 22 in Lucknow. It adopted a descriptive research design using purposive sampling and analyzed data via Pearson Product Moment correlation. ● The study recommends that mental health professionals and educators implement better training to identify and counsel students to prevent suicide. ● Individual-level interventions should focus on bolstering coping efficacy through methods like Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT). Main Findings ● Positive Relationship: There is a significant positive relationship between suicidal tendency and depression among college students. ● Dependency: Suicidal tendency and suicidal behavior were found to be dependent on each other in both male and female students. ● Prevalence: Students reported feeling more depression in college (Mean = 16.89) compared to scores for actual suicidal behavior (Mean = 15.02). ● Gender Differences: While a significant positive correlation was found generally, male students specifically showed a significant negative correlation between suicidal tendency and depression in certain sub-analyses.
