The Umbrabyte: A Foundational Thesis on the Ghosts of Dead Ecosystems
Abstract
Abstract This foundational thesis defines the "Umbrabyte"—a living artifact in a dead ecosystem. The definitive classification for the ghosts of the digital past, the Umbrabyte represents a "liminal" state where a file (like an .html page or .mp4 video) remains technically functional, but its "native ecosystem" (the platform, the community, the social context) has been rendered extinct. The work establishes a taxonomy for these survivors (The "Fly in Amber," The "Severed Function," The "Statue in the Town Square") and argues that the Digital Archaeologist must serve as a "Steward" of these ghosts, preserving not just the file, but the memory of the murdered context.
