Abstract

Abstract This foundational thesis defines the "Petribyte"—the fossil of function. The definitive classification for artifacts of the digital past whose native ecosystem has gone extinct, the Petribyte proves that digital obsolescence is a form of rapid, functional fossilization. The work establishes a taxonomy for these fossils (The Technical Petribyte, including defunct formats like .rm; and The Conceptual Petribyte, including extinct rituals like the "Away Message") and argues that the Digital Archaeologist must serve as a "Translator," deciphering these "Rosetta Stones" to recover the lost wisdom of the hand-built web.
