The Fine-Structure Constant as Pathway Selection Probability: A Discrete Ontological Derivation of α = 1/137
Abstract
We present a novel derivation of the fine-structure constant α ≈ 1/137 from first principles, without recourse to empirical fitting. Within the Taichu formalism—a discrete, asymmetric ontological framework—we demonstrate that electromagnetic interactions occur through exactly 137 distinct pathways, arising from the combination of a 7-dimensional directional state space (2^7 = 128) and a 3-state interaction tensor (3^2 = 9). The probability of selecting any single pathway yields α = 1/137. This framework naturally explains atomic ground states as shortest-path configurations and spectral fine structure as pathway transitions under external perturbation. This work derives the integer 137 from first principles using the Taichu (太初) formalism. The fine-structure constant is shown to be a pathway count, not an empirical constant.
