Rather than pursuing liberation or rejecting capitalism, this paper advances a single question: Can understanding itself become value? The focus here is not moral reform, but the structural point at which value is generated—and lost. 1. Position of v1.3 Across v1.0–v1.2, alienation was redefined as follows: Alienation is not misfortune Alienation is not domination Alienation is a condition in which the initiative of understanding becomes unclear v1.3 advances one step further: The problem of alienation emerges where understanding is not converted into value. 2. The Unrecovered Question in Marx Marx rigorously analyzed where value is produced and where it is appropriated. This paper deliberately asks a different question: Was understanding itself ever treated as value? Labor became value.Outputs became value.Time was quantified. Understanding alone remained outside the circuit of value. 3. Why Understanding Was Not Valued Understanding is: slow difficult to quantify resistant to standardization As a result, institutions and markets relied on understanding as a prerequisite, while refusing to recognize it as value. Here lies an additional layer of alienation. 4. From Alienated Labor to Alienated Understanding Conventional accounts define alienation as: separation from labor appropriation of results v1.3 reframes this: Alienation occurs when understanding is severed from the circuit of value creation. People work. Results are delivered. Yet, the act of understanding why things occur remains disconnected from value. 5. The First Appearance of Understanding Capitalism Understanding Capitalism is not an ethical idealnor a humanitarian slogan. It refers to: a structure in which understanding is explicitly positioned within value generation. The key is not proclaiming that understanding matters, but identifying where and how understanding converts into value. 6. A Necessary Clarification Understanding Capitalism does not: glorify effort mandate introspection impose thinking as obligation Understanding carries value only when exercised. Once it becomes compulsory, understanding is alienated again. 7. Position Reached in v1.3 Only one point is fixed in v1.3: Alienation is the state in which understanding fails to convert into value. Accordingly, liberation is not an ideal endpoint. It is the return of understanding to the circuit of value creation. 8. Open Directions Ahead Multiple paths extend from here: a formal theory of Understanding Capitalism AI and the conversion of understanding into value applications in education, labor, and evaluation design narrative and translational forms None are fixed yet. One condition remains: The initiative of understanding must be explicitly preserved within the structure. Note This paper does not present a completed model of Understanding Capitalism. That task is deferred to subsequent work. What is offered here is onlythe logical bridge from alienation theory to Understanding Capitalism.
