Consciousness as Exceptional Structure: A Mathematical Bridge Between Phenomenology and Fundamental Physics
Abstract
We present a mathematically rigorous framework connecting consciousness phenomenology to fundamental physics through exceptional algebraic structures. Beginning with three phenomenological distinctions inherent in conscious experience, we construct a formal isomorphism to F3 2 and thence to the Fano plane P2(F2). This structure uniquely determines the octonion algebra O, whose automorphism group G2 has only real representations—making chiral fermions impossible. We therefore extend to the exceptional Jordan algebra J3(O), whose symmetry includes E6, providing complex representations for the Standard Model. We develop a complete E6 grand unified theory as an effective quantum field theory with an additional scalar field ΦC in the 27 representation, interpreted as encoding boundary conditions for the mathematical structure of consciousness. Detailed renormalization group analysis with complete Higgs sector yields testable predictions: proton decay τ(p→e+π0) = (3.2±1.5)×1035 years, gauge coupling unification at MGUT = (1.8 ±0.6) ×1016 GeV, and a Z′ boson mass MZ′ = 5.2 ±1.5 TeV. For neuroscience, we propose that conscious brain states approximately instantiate J3(O) structure, predicting neural covariance matrices show a dimensionality signature around 27 ±3 principal components with specific phase coupling patterns following the Fano plane. While the consciousness-physics connection remains speculative, the framework demonstrates that mathematically precise, empirically testable bridges can be constructed between these domains.
