The 22 Arcana: A Pattern Language for Systemic Distortion
Abstract
Every system drifts toward distortion. This paper presents the 22 Arcana—a complete pattern language for identifying and naming the predictable ways systems warp over time. Each Arcana represents a specific distortion mechanism: a diagnostic key that reveals how clarity erodes, boundaries fail, and agency transfers from maker to system. The framework spans three domains: Foundation (Arcana I–VII), Flow (Arcana VIII–XIV), and Identity (Arcana XV–XXII). Unlike symptom-focused analysis, the Arcana approach treats distortion as architectural—predictable, nameable, and therefore visible. This pattern language serves as a diagnostic instrument for practitioners navigating technological, organizational, relational, and personal systems in an era of accelerating complexity.
