The Importance and Purpose of Research in Solving Real-World Problems and Advancing Sustainable Development
Abstract
Abstract Research is a core social institution for generating reliable knowledge, testing solutions, and guiding decisions under uncertainty. In the context of sustainable development—where environmental limits, inequality, and economic needs interact—research serves multiple purposes: diagnosing complex problems, designing and evaluating interventions, enabling innovation systems, and improving governance and accountability. This narrative review synthesizes ScienceDirect-indexed scholarship on (i) research functions and impact pathways, (ii) transdisciplinary and co-produced approaches for complex sustainability challenges, (iii) innovation- and mission-oriented research for sustainability transitions, (iv) responsible research and innovation (RRI) and sustainability assessment, and (v) common barriers (misalignment, weak uptake, governance and ethics challenges). Evidence indicates that sustainability progress depends not only on producing more research but also on improving the quality of problem framing, stakeholder engagement, learning processes, and institutional mechanisms linking research to action. Recent studies highlight persistent misalignment between national research priorities and SDG needs, increased use of real-world experiments and sustainability labs, and growing attention to systems thinking, mission-oriented innovation systems, and RRI-based governance frameworks. The review concludes with practical implications for researchers, universities, funders, and policymakers aiming to strengthen research-for-sustainability outcomes. Keywords: research purpose; sustainable development; SDGs; transdisciplinary research; knowledge co-production; systems thinking; mission-oriented innovation; responsible research and innovation; real-world laboratories; research impact.
