Abstract

Air quality has emerged as one of the most critical environmental health challenges of the twenty-first century. The World Health Organization estimates that ambient air pollution causes approximately 7 million premature deaths annually (WHO, 2021), with particularly severe impacts in developing and rapidly urbanizing regions. Traditional air quality monitoring systems, while scientifically rigorous, remain economically inaccessible to most communities due to high capital expenditure and maintenance costs. The rapid advancement of Internet of Things (IoT) technologies has created unprecedented opportunities for democratizing environmental monitoring. The ESP32 microcontroller, developed by Espressif Systems, represents a paradigm shift in this domain. This dual-core processor operates at 240 MHz with integrated WiFi and Bluetooth Low Energy capabilities, while maintaining exceptional cost-effectiveness—typically ranging from $5 to $15 per unit (Espressif Systems, 2024). When integrated with commercial-grade particulate matter sensors and atmospheric sensors, the ESP32 platform enables the creation of distributed monitoring networks capable of providing real-time, hyper-local air quality data. The complete implementation, including firmware code, hardware schematics, and deployment documentation, is available in the open-source GitHub repository (https://github.com/erendogan83/esp32-iot-aqi) and released under the MIT License.
