Abstract

RRS-007 is a structural analysis release within the Research Release System (RRS),examining how meaning becomes unstable over time—even when no one misreads, misunderstands, or acts in bad faith. Rather than treating misinterpretation as a human or cognitive failure, this release identifies interpretive drift as a structural outcome that emerges in high-density semantic systems. Meaning does not drift because people are wrong. It drifts because meaning continues after containment ends. From Misinterpretation to Structural Drift Interpretive instability is commonly explained through familiar causes: misunderstanding loss of context malicious reframing insufficient explanation RRS-007 argues that these explanations are structurally insufficient. In systems with high semantic compression, meaning can shift even when texts are read correctly, intent is understood, and scope limitations are acknowledged. At sufficient density, correctness does not guarantee stability. Interpretive Drift Is Not Misuse A central claim of RRS-007 is that interpretive drift does not require misuse. No distortion, exaggeration, or violation is necessary. Drift begins when interpretation quietly replaces authorization—when what a structure allows one to inferis mistaken for what a release permits one to claim. The structure itself remains unchanged. What shifts is who carries meaning forward. Observer Substitution as a Structural Mechanism RRS-007 identifies observer substitution as the core mechanism behind interpretive drift. Over time, a structural shift occurs: authorial constraint gives way to reader inference release boundaries dissolve into interpretive latitude meaning migrates with the observer rather than remaining anchored to origin This is not semantic decay. It is a reassignment of interpretive authority. Drift follows continuation, not distortion. Relationship to Formal Appearance Formal and coherent structures accelerate interpretive drift. The more a structure appears: internally complete symbolically closed free of contradiction the easier it becomes to treat interpretation as continuation rather than violation. Meaning does not need to be altered to become unstable. It only needs to persist. What RRS-007 Is Not RRS-007 explicitly does not introduce: a theory of interpretation a framework for meaning preservation a corrective method or best practice a diagnostic or evaluative tool This release offers no guidance for preventing drift. Its function is explanatory, not preventative. Any attempt to operationalize this release constitutes a protocol violation. Position Within the Research Release System RRS-007 operates downstream of earlier RRS releases addressing structure, containment, and formalization risk. It does not extend those claims. It isolates a late-stage failure mode that emerges after containment appears to have succeeded. Interpretive drift is not an anomaly. It is the default trajectory of meaning that survives its boundary. Conclusion Interpretive drift is not misunderstanding. It is not misuse. It is not a failure of intelligence. It is the structural consequence of meaning being carried forward. Once interpretation continues beyond containment, stability does not gradually erode— it quietly transfers.
