Scripts for: "Changes in temperature, rainfall and snow cover during the reproductive season of Arctic-breeding birds"
Abstract
This repository contains the analysis and preprocessing scripts used to generate the results and figures for the "Changes in temperature, rainfall and snow cover during the reproductive season of Arctic-breeding birds" manuscript. The scripts analyse Arctic precipitation, snowfall, snow cover, and near-surface air temperature using ERA5 reanalysis data, CMIP6 climate model simulations (historical and future scenarios), ALEVA long steady-state EC-Earth simulations, used to examine internal variability and long-term hydroclimatic behaviour under fixed forcing. Rainfall is explicitly reconstructed as precipitation minus snowfall, enabling a physically consistent separation of rain and snow across time, seasons, and Arctic sub-regions. The workflow combines: Spatial and temporal preprocessing using Climate Data Operators (CDO) in Bash, including remapping, Arctic subsetting, masking, detrending, and long-term time series reconstruction. Statistical analysis and visualisation in Python, including ensemble aggregation, breakpoint and trend analysis, variability and extreme-event metrics, and regional (Area of Interest) comparisons. The scripts document the exact research workflow used in the study and are shared for transparency and reproducibility of the scientific results. They reflect an exploratory research pipeline developed over the course of the project rather than a general-purpose software package.
