Biomechanics of Tendons and Knee Joint Rebalancing
Abstract
This article presents a biomechanical analysis of tendons and knee joint function in dogs following surgical correction of cranial cruciate ligament rupture using the TPLO technique. The focus is placed on how knee joint stability is restored through biomechanical rebalancing of forces rather than reliance on the damaged ligament itself. Key topics include the functional role of the cranial cruciate ligament, alterations in shear and compressive forces after tibial plateau modification, and the stages of bone healing and functional recovery. In addition, the article addresses treatment decision-making from the perspective of animal caregivers, incorporating considerations of financial burden and long-term quality of life. By integrating biomechanical principles with real-life caregiving contexts, this work frames TPLO not merely as a surgical procedure but as a biomechanical strategy for sustainable knee joint function in companion animals.
