Between Ruin and Emergence: The Existential Meaning of Observing Urban Construction
Abstract
This philosophical essay examines the existential meaning of witnessing urban construction in the modern world. It contrasts the experience of cities as completed environments with their historical role as processes of becoming. Drawing on literature, documentary photography, and sociological reflection, the work explores how construction restores a sense of historical continuity and material time, while ruin and abandonment represent the erasure of lived meaning. The study situates the modern observer between collapse and renewal, framing the city as an organism through which civilization affirms its persistence against entropy, violence, and oblivion.
