Abstract

Introduces the Principle of Harmonic Locking (PHL) as a general physical mechanism where a reference field χ couples harmonically to a physical field φ through state-dependent stiffness k(I). Strong locking (k→∞) recovers standard theory (e.g., General Relativity); weak locking (k→0) produces nonlocal, nonlinear behavior with memory effects. No new propagating degrees of freedom required—phenomenology emerges from constraint softening rather than entity addition. Core formalism: Locking Lagrangian ℒ_lock = -½k(I)(χ-φ)², controlled invariant I determining regime. Integrates out reference field to obtain effective action S_eff with kernel Π(q,I) = k(I)K(q)/(k(I)+K(q)). Infrared coarse-graining yields constitutive coefficient μ(I) = k(I)/(k(I)+K(qIR)), producing nonlinear response μ ∝ I^p in unlocking regime. Gravitational application: Identifies φ ~ R (curvature), χ ~ R_ref (reference curvature), I = |∇Φ|/a₀. For p=1 (linear softening), derives baryonic Tully-Fisher relation v⁴ = GMa₀ from first principles via ∇·(μ∇Φ) ~ 4πGρ without dark matter particles or ad hoc interpolation. Explains why a₀ ~ cH₀ (reference curvature set by cosmological scales). Key observational discriminator: Cluster merger test distinguishes PHL from dark matter. PHL predicts gas-lensing offset correlates with merger relaxation time (curvature memory relaxes over characteristic timescale). Dark matter predicts scatter with halo mass, no systematic time dependence. Early-stage mergers show large offset (memory unrelaxed); late-stage show small offset (memory relaxed). Future surveys (Rubin Observatory, Euclid) provide definitive test. Broader applications: Quantum decoherence (collective rates Γ ∝ N² from harmonic unlocking), condensed matter (order parameter dynamics, critical phenomena), cosmology (reference curvature from early universe affecting late-time dynamics). Paradigm shift: New physics arises from constraint architecture softening across scale/state, not from adding fundamental entities. Provides theoretical foundation for MOND phenomenology while maintaining falsifiability. Formulated as rigorous effective field theory with controlled approximations, systematic IR closure, well-defined validity regime (q < qIR, I small), and ghost-free spectrum.
