Abstract

This dataset contains estimates of mode-1 $M_2$ internal tides in the Southern Ocean, derived from the Surface Water and Ocean Topography (SWOT) satellite during its Calibration/Validation (Cal/Val) phase (April to July 2023). These data support the results and reproducibility of figures presented in the manuscript submitted to Journal of Geophysical Research: Oceans. The dataset includes: Regional snapshots of Sea Surface Height Anomaly (SSHA) in SWOT data Estimates of mode-1 M2 internal tides (amplitudes, phases, and propagation directions), as well as uncertainties of amplitudes and phases using plane-wave-fit technique in the Southern Ocean using SWOT data Processed data comparing SWOT-derived estimates against the High-Resolution Empirical Tide (HRET) model. Global maps of empirical mode-1 M2 internal tide parameters derived from stratification climatology, including phase speed, group speed, wavelength, ratio of surface amplitude to max interior amplitude, ratio of depth-integrated energy to surface amplitude squared, ratio of depth-integrated energy flux to surface amplitude squared Data are provided in NetCDF format. See the accompanying GitHub repository for Python notebook used to generate the figures in the study at https://github.com/youranli001/swot-internal-tide.
