Compassionate Logic: Principles of Pragmatic Veracity and Ontological Stewardship
Abstract
The contemporary informational landscape is characterized by an Epistemological Collapse—a systemic erosion of shared truth-verification methods driven by algorithmic personalization, engagement incentives, and the proliferation of synthetic media. In this high-entropy environment, the traditional ethical model of "absolute, immediate candor" is often insufficient and, in high-stakes contexts, can precipitate Ontological Harm—severe psychological or systemic damage for which the recipient lacks the necessary readiness. This white paper introduces Compassionate Logic, a formal ethical operating system for the responsible stewardship of information. It proposes a rigorous alternative to the binary choice between brutal honesty and paternalistic deception. Key Contributions: Taxonomy of Harm: Defines Ontological Harm, Data-Weapons (extrinsic/physical threats), and Soul-Shatterers (intrinsic/identity threats). The Gardener's Calculus: Presents an eight-step, auditable decision protocol for leaders, parents, and AI practitioners to determine the legitimacy, necessity, and method of disclosing hazardous truths. Pragmatic Veracity: Establishes a framework for managing the velocity and framing of truth without compromising its substance. Generative Guidance: Shifts the steward's role from Oracle to Coach, utilizing the Scaffolding Ladder (Appendix B) to build recipient resilience and repay the "Disclosure Debt." Artifacts Included: Full Technical Standard (PDF) Operational Assessment Worksheet (Printable Protocol) Institutional Audit Log Template (CSV) Keywords:Information Ethics, Ontological Harm, Pragmatic Veracity, Epistemological Collapse, Cognitive Security, AI Ethics, Stewardship, Crisis Communication, Leadership Ethics.
