Project-Based Learning Methodology for Teaching Software Engineering: Experience in the Information Technology Program at Universidad Técnica Luis Vargas Torres de Esmeraldas (UTLVTE)
Abstract
The teaching of Software Engineering in higher education faces significant challenges related to student engagement, practical skill development, and the integration of theory with real-world problem solving. This study presents an educational experience based on the Project-Based Learning (PBL) methodology applied in the Software Engineering course of the Information Technology program at Universidad Técnica Luis Vargas Torres de Esmeraldas, Ecuador. The objective of this research was to analyze the impact of PBL on student learning, participation, and understanding of software development processes. The methodology involved the design and implementation of collaborative projects aligned with real software development scenarios, supported by continuous assessment strategies. Data were collected through academic performance records, project evaluations, and student perception surveys. The results indicate that over 96 % of students reported high satisfaction and perceived improved professional readiness in motivation, teamwork, and the application of theoretical concepts to practical contexts. The study concludes that PBL is an effective pedagogical strategy for teaching Software Engineering and supports the integration of active learning methodologies in technology-related higher education programs.
