Visualizing the Invisible: A Comparative Study on the Effectiveness of Traditional Visual Modeling and Cell World App Simulation in Enhancing Students' Conceptual Understanding of Cell Structure among Grade 11 STEM Students at CvSU–CCAT Campus, A.Y. 2025–2026
Abstract
This study examined the effectiveness of Traditional Visual Modeling and the Cell World App Simulation in enhancing the conceptual understanding of cell structure among Grade 11 STEM students at CvSU–CCAT Campus. A quasi-experimental pretest–posttest design was employed involving two groups exposed to different instructional approaches. Students’ conceptual understanding was measured using a researcher-developed 25-item multiple-choice test. Descriptive statistics and inferential analyses, including independent and paired sample t-tests, were used to analyze the data. Pre-test results indicated moderate prior knowledge of cell structure, while post-test results showed substantial improvement in performance. A significant difference was found between the gain scores of the two groups, t (28) = −12.31, p < .001, with students exposed to the Cell World App Simulation achieving higher learning gains than those taught using Traditional Visual Modeling. The findings suggest that simulation-based instruction is more effective in enhancing students’ conceptual understanding of cell structure. The study recommends the integration of digital simulations into biology instruction to promote meaningful and effective learning.
