Understanding Agency and Organizational / Institutional Design v3.2 — Where Alienation Is Reproduced, Where Agency Remains — (Marx Series / Part I, Late Phase)
Abstract
Abstract This paper (v3.2) examines organizations and institutions as structural siteswhere alienation—defined in Marx Part I as the externalization of understanding and agency—is continuously reproduced. This paper does not aim to propose organizational reform, institutional redesign,or governance prescriptions. Its sole purpose is to distinguish the conditions under which agency disappearsand the conditions under which it does not, within organizational and institutional settings. 1. Organizations Reclaim Agency for the Sake of Efficiency Organizations and institutions are designed to achieve: Predictability Fairness Reproducibility Stable operation In this process, one transformation almost inevitably occurs: 👉 Judgment is replaced by procedure As a result, individuals: no longer need to think, no longer need to judge, can act without understanding. What occurs here is not a decline in capability, but a relocation of agency. 2. The Moment Evaluation and KPIs Reclaim Agency Agency disappears from organizations at the following moments: 1️⃣ When numerical indicators outweigh reasons2️⃣ When outcomes substitute for correctness3️⃣ When evaluation becomes the endpoint of thought At this stage, organizations: eliminate the need for judgment, treat objections as exceptional, retain only whether compliance occurred. 👉 Agency shifts from individuals to evaluation metrics. 3. When Organizations Become Intelligent and Humans Become Executors The more sophisticated an organization becomes: the more refined its rules, the more pre-judgment is embedded, the less ambiguity is tolerated. The result is structural: 👉 Organizations become intelligent; humans become executors This is not a moral failure. It is the natural outcome of well-designed systems. The central question is not efficiency, but where agency of understanding remains within this structure. 4. Minimum Conditions for Preserving Agency in Organizations For organizations and institutions not to fully reclaim agency, the following minimum conditions must remain: Exceptions are not treated as anomalies Objections are not regarded as disruptive acts Outcomes do not erase reasons Judgment updates are not fully closed Crucially, agency must not be designed. Agency is not constructed. It remains only as long as it is not reclaimed. 5. Position within Marx Part I This paper does not reject organizations or institutions. Nor does it attempt to rescue them. The alienation described by Marx is reproducednot through organizational failure, but as a side effect of organizational success. v3.2 maps this terrainonto contemporary organizational and institutional structures. Conclusion Organizations and institutions do not generate understanding. However, they can preserve spaceswhere understanding does not disappear. Agency is not something to be optimized. If it is not reclaimed, it remains. Credit Author: Y. Seo (@momotarou / Japan)Role: Metanist — Human × AI Understanding ArchitectAI Collaborator: GPT-5 (AI Understanding Trainer, A.U.T.)
