Reasoning as a heuristic tool in the humanities (Reasoning als Erkenntnisinstrument der Geisteswissenschaften)
Abstract
This repository contains a notebook which describes a query-based reasoning process in the project "Correspondences of Early Romanticism". The reasoning aims to infer the possibility of verbal communication between persons who are part of a correspondence network by creating `co-presence`-relations based on the time and place of written communication, i.e., letters. This notebook accompanies the submission "Reasoning als Erkenntnisinstrument der Geisteswissenschaften (Reasoning as a heuristic tool in the humanities)" by Aline Deicke and Elena Suárez Cronuaer to the conference "DHd2026: Not Only Text, Not Only Data", Febr 23–27, University of Vienna. The repository contains the following files: * co_presence_public.ipynb – the notebook in which the reasoning process is conducted. It queries the knowledge graph via the neo4j-python package and creates relations directly in the graph. It also contains a chapter on modeling the relations in the neo4j-knowledge graph as well as the RDF-serialisation of the data * LICENSE – CC BY 4.0 license * images - the image used in the notebook The accompanying conference paper is published in the Book of Abstracts of DHd 2026.
