Simulation of Drive Shafts for Materials Using FEA- A Critical Review
Abstract
Drive shafts are critical power transmission components widely used in automotive, aerospace, and industrial applications, where they are subjected to combined torsional, bending, and fatigue loading conditions. Optimization of drive shafts is essential to achieve weight reduction, improved strength-to-weight ratio, enhanced fatigue life, and reliable dynamic performance. This article presents a critical review of existing research on the optimization of drive shafts with particular emphasis on material selection and finite element analysis (FEA)–based design approaches. Various conventional and advanced materials, including steel alloys, aluminum alloys, composite materials, and hybrid shafts, are systematically examined in terms of mechanical properties, manufacturability, and performance characteristics. The review critically evaluates FEA-based studies focusing on stress distribution, deformation, torsional stiffness, critical speed, vibration behavior, and fatigue life under realistic loading conditions. Different optimization strategies, such as material substitution, geometric modification, and laminate configuration in composite shafts, are analyzed to assess their effectiveness in improving structural efficiency and reducing weight. Additionally, the influence of manufacturing constraints, cost considerations, and design standards on drive shaft optimization is discussed. Based on the reviewed literature, key research gaps and future research directions are identified, particularly concerning multi-objective optimization, experimental validation, and the integration of advanced materials with high-fidelity FEA models. This review aims to serve as a comprehensive reference for researchers and design engineers seeking to develop lightweight, durable, and high-performance drive shafts through material-focused FEA optimization.
