Abstract

The connecting rod is a vital component of internal combustion engines, subjected to complex cyclic loading due to gas pressure and inertia forces during engine operation. Optimization of the connecting rod is essential to achieve weight reduction, improved fatigue life, and enhanced structural reliability without compromising strength and durability. This article presents a critical review of existing research on the optimization of connecting rods with a specific focus on material selection and ANSYS-based finite element analysis. Various conventional and advanced materials, including forged steel, aluminum alloys, titanium alloys, and composite materials, are systematically examined in terms of mechanical properties, manufacturability, and performance. The review critically evaluates ANSYS-based studies addressing stress distribution, deformation behavior, fatigue life, buckling stability, and failure modes under realistic loading conditions. Different optimization techniques, such as geometry modification, material substitution, and simulation-driven design approaches, are analyzed to assess their effectiveness in achieving weight and stress reduction. Additionally, the influence of manufacturing processes and design constraints on connecting rod performance is discussed. Based on the reviewed literature, key research gaps and future research directions are identified, particularly in the areas of multi-objective optimization, experimental validation, and the integration of advanced materials with ANSYS-based optimization frameworks. This review aims to serve as a comprehensive reference for researchers and design engineers seeking to optimize connecting rod performance through material selection and finite element analysis.
