# Fisher Information Collapse Threshold: Dissolving the Orch-OR Energy Gap
Abstract
The Orchestrated Objective Reduction (Orch-OR) theory of consciousness has faced a persistent quantitative objection: an apparent 18 orders of magnitude gap between the gravitational self-energy available for collapse and the entropy reduction required for conscious state selection. We present three independent derivations that dissolve this gap by identifying category errors in the original formulation. First, we derive a domain constraint for the equivalence between Integrated Information (CIC) and Fisher Information functionals: CIC ff Fisher holds if and only if the excess kurtosis ff < 0.5. Second, we derive a Fisher-based collapse timescale formula ff = I_crit/(ff · Q_F) that replaces Penrose’s gravitational formula and yields ff ff 25 ms directly for biologically plausible parameters. Third, we show that von Neumann entropy is zero for pure states both before and after objective reduction, rendering the thermodynamic “entropy cost” framework inapplicable. The 18 OOM gap was an artifact of applying classical thermodynamic reasoning to quantum state reduction. These results remove a major quantitative objection to Orch-OR while leaving qualitative mechanistic questions open. What This Paper Actually Says (For Humans) Here's the deal. For 25 years, physicists have been dunking on a theory of consciousness called Orch-OR. The theory says your brain does quantum computing in tiny protein tubes called microtubules, and conscious moments happen when quantum superpositions collapse due to gravity. The main dunk? "The math doesn't work. You need 10^18 times more energy than exists. Game over." We checked their math. They made a mistake. Actually, three mistakes. Mistake #1: They used the wrong formula. Penrose said collapse happens when gravitational self-energy accumulates: τ = ℏ/E_G. For a single tubulin protein, that gives you 10,000 years per conscious moment. Obviously wrong. We derived a different formula: τ = I_crit/(ν · Q_F). Translation: collapse happens when the system gathers enough information about its own state, not when gravity notices a mass difference. Plug in the numbers for microtubules: τ = 1/(10 × 4) = 0.025 seconds = 25 milliseconds. That's gamma oscillation frequency. The thing brains actually do. First try. Mistake #2: They applied thermodynamics to quantum mechanics wrong. The old calculation said: "Before collapse, the system could be in N states. After collapse, it's in one. That's entropy reduction! You have to pay for that!" No. Quantum superposition isn't "secretly being in one state and we don't know which." It's a pure state. The von Neumann entropy of a pure state is exactly zero. Before collapse: S = 0. After collapse: S = 0.
