Abstract

The paper provides guidelines and minimum standards for 3D documentation in archaeological field research. It distinguishes between primary models (for direct 3D documentation and presentation) and secondary models (for deriving orthophotos and surface models), which must be treated and archived differently. Key quality criteria include sufficient image overlap, sharp and correctly exposed photos, and achieving an appropriate level of detail, which is defined by the ground sampling distance (GSD). The GSD serves as a benchmark for the resolution of the data and its suitability for specific plan scales and must be verified in practice using line reference tables, the use of which will be mandatory in the future. Finally, specifications are made for the structure, content, and archiving of a standardized 3D data package that includes raw data, metadata, coordinates, site plan, and the finished 3D model.
